New amenities include pro-style lockers, a new spa facility, classic barbershop and salon, high-end athletic retail and even a speakeasy.
Amidst a flurry of anticipation, the Los Angeles Athletic Club is beginning construction on a portion of its 125,000 sq/ft space. The 12-story building encompasses athletic, social, and meeting spaces, along with three floors of hotel rooms. This multi-million dollar interior renovation focuses on the fifth and sixth floors. The Club will remain open during the multiple phases of construction, which include men’s and women’s locker rooms, spa facilities, retail space, and food and beverage services.
Designed by Los Angeles-based SRK Architects, the project is the most significant renovation in the Clubs recent history. According to general contractor Phoenix Construction & Management, construction will be done in three six-month phases so that members will have continuous access to locker rooms. Completion is scheduled for January 2016.
We are delighted to announce the start of our major renovation to our 5th and 6th floors, said Los Angeles Athletic Clubs General Manager Steve Hathaway. Our goal is to create an unparalleled member experience by providing enhanced amenities in our locker rooms and spa areas while honoring the Clubs history by converting portions of the 6th floor to its original design. The Los Angeles Athletic Club has always been at the forefront of creating a unique experience where members can flex their athletic and social skills.
Built in 1912, Los Angeles Athletic Club represents an excellent example of Beaux Arts architecture, explains SRK managing partner Brian Kite. “To honor the Club’s history while bringing it into the 21st century, the interior design is transitional with a nod to classical, Romanesque, and art deco motifs, set in a contemporary, playful expression,” the architect says.
With the remodel, the mens and womens locker facilities will be side by side and served through a common retail reception lobby on the fifth floor. Extensive lounge and wet facilities complement the locker areas including hydrotherapy, steam, and sauna. An expansive grand staircase will connect the fifth-floor reception to the sixth-floor spa lobby, which accesses a barbershop featuring a secret door that leads to a speakeasy, natural salt cave, nail salon, and the Club’s iconic swimming pool ( the first above ground pool west of the Mississippi).
The sixth floor is designed to encompass all spa and treatment facilities and will bring back the historic poolside lounge re-imagined as the Plunge Café”.
LAAC is in talks with local partner companies for boutique pop-up retail spaces, which will be set up on a rotating basis with a focus on local designer goods. Merchandise will include sports gear, clothing, and urban accessories.
A Discovery Center is now open during business hours on the LAAC’s first floor to showcase the new design and provide more detailed information about each phase of the project.
